What is Vedic Astrology?
In this article let us try to understand what Vedic astrology is in a nut shell. Here, a brief fundamental explanation is provided. In this article I am providing a snap shot view of some of the concepts of Vedic Astrology. This is not a complete explanation of Vedic Astrology.
Vedic astrology is study of celestial position of planets and their motion and their impact on living beings on earth.
As per Vedic Astrology there are 27 constellations called Nakshatras, 12 zodiac signs, 9 planets and 12 houses.
In a horoscope or chart there are 12 houses. Each house represents an aspect of a human life. 12 signs are distributed among 12 houses and nine planets are placed in different houses of the horoscope or chart.
The zodiac sky is considered 360 degrees and it is divided into 12 equal parts. Each sign is of 30 degrees and its latitude and longitude is defined in each house.
Each house represents an aspect of an individual’s life. By analyzing the rasis and planets occupied by different planets we can assess and individual’s life.
Again rasis are divided into movable, fixed and dual. Movable rasis tend to be dynamic. Sthira rasis are stable and constant. Dual rasis have multiple characters.
In a horoscope, there are 12 houses represented by below rashis:
- Aries (Mesha)
- Taurus (Vrishaba)
- Mithun (Gemini)
- Cancer (Kark)
- Leo (Simha)
- Virgo (Kanya)
- Libra (Tula)
- Scorpio (Vrischik)
- Sagittarius (Dhanu)

- Pisces (Meena)
Each rasi is governed by an element called the tatva of the rasi.
- Air (Vayu)

- Earth (Prithvi)
- Fire (Agni)
- Water (Jal)
There are 27 nakshatras called constellations. Following is the list of nakshatras:

Following is the list of seven planets and 2 shadow planets called chaya grahas:
- The Sun
- The Moon
- Mars
- Mercury
- Venus
- Jupiter
- Saturn
Following are the two chaya grahas:
- Rahu
- Ketu
Taking into consideration a person’s time of birth, place of birth and date of birth, birth chart or horoscope of the person is created. It consists of a main rashi chart as well as divisional charts.
These charts are analyzed to decipher the influences of planets on the person and the likely out comes and events. An individuals’ destiny and fortune and direction of life can be assessed from the birth chart and other divisional charts.
Dasas and antardasas divide an individual’s life into different time periods. Each time period is ruled by different planet. By analyzing each dasa system we can analyze the events in one’s life.
